Personal Background:
Greetings! If I have not had the pleasure of meeting you yet, perhaps there are some things you would like to know about me. To begin, I am in my sixth and final year of university studies, having completed a B.A. in Dramatic Arts, and am now completing my after-degree in education with a minor in English Language Arts. While I love university, my relationship with education was not always so straightforward.
Growing up I suffered from chronic health problems and learning disabilities which ensured that neither myself or my brother could attend public school, so now rather ironically I am studying to be a teacher having been home-schooled my whole upbringing!. Yet I wouldn’t trade this experience, as I believe it has shaped my learning philosophy to have empathy for those students typically overlooked by society, and reminded me that all students can find success, albeit through different means, and expressed in different ways. This has grown into a passion for witnessing the growth in my students when I find how to best help them. |
Throughout my life I have been gifted with opportunities to work with young people, beginning with working at a summer camp my parents were directors of on a small island off the coast of B.C., to teaching swimming lessons, and now working as an educator at Fort Steele Heritage Town where I teach blacksmithing, gold panning, and railway operations, amongst other things. However, I have always been drawn to teaching, which has led me to instructing in a variety of clubs these days at university, such at the Medieval Club (historic fencing), Object manipulation Club, Swing Dance Club, and so on. Personally, I have an affinity for the kinesthetic, so when I am not acting or teaching, I fill my days with eclectic pursuits ranging from historic fencing to magic tricks, rock climbing, and costuming. |
